Catching up with King Henry VIII himself!

We recently caught up with John White from Select Society to learn more about the entertaining one man show Divorced, Behead, Died : An Audience with King Henry VIII coming to Blackfriars in June and what attendees can expect from the King himself!

Tell us a little about yourself and Select Society?
‘John White – a ‘Performance Historian’ who trades as ‘Select Society’, has for over 30 years been involved in the production and performance of historically themed shows at heritage venues and theatres etc, across the UK and in the USA.’

What three words would you use to describe the work you do and why?
‘Bring history (to) life

What can the audience expect from a Select Society show?
‘Divorced, Beheaded, Died: An Audience with King Henry VIII’ will afford the audience the opportunity to come face-to-face with the King who, as he reflects upon his long reign, his wives and his children, will bring to the fore a great deal of historical fact and detail, in a dramatic and entertaining fashion. Concluding with a Q&A where the audience will be invited to question the King on any related topic!

What has been your biggest highlight to date?
Performing as Henry VIII at Windsor Castle on behalf of the Royal Household!

Where do you get your inspiration?
I have been captivated by history all my life and with a passion for performance, it was logical to bring the two together. I have recreated a host of differing characters over a wide range of history for many years.  Henry has a particular fascination- I am related to him, he is my 21st cousin, 6 times removed!

Anything exciting coming up?
The show continues to tour across the country, together with our other productions – we will again go to the USA in November where Henry proves very popular.
