Exploring treasured Medieval tipples

As dry-January comes to an end, we are taking a look at popular alcohol the friars enjoyed during Medieval times. Records on what would have been the favourite tipples of the friars are scarce but we’ll give it a shot!

Both the upper and lower classes drank alcohol but the friars would have primarily drank beer due to wine being drank by the rich. It is likely the friars would have largely stuck to drinking beer and water due to these drinks being readily available. One of the most popular types of beer during Medieval times was godale which translates from German simply as ‘good beer’. Speaking of good beer, check out the range of beer we offer below from local brewers such as Gloucester Brewery.

Fun fact, it is also said that in Medieval times beer could be used for shopping and to pay taxes, hoorah for beer! Although, as the friars were only allowed to accept donations of clothing or food for their service, they would not have received a salary.

Spirits available at Blackfriars

The friars would have drunk up to a gallon of beer a day spread out throughout the day which included beer in meals such as beer soup. This was because in Medieval times beer was considered to be a source of energy and nutrients, a gallon of beer a day keeps the doctor away?
